PARENT INFORMATION
Latin is a language no longer used, resulting in many
people asking why a student should learn a “dead” language.
Because it is not a spoken language, it is a pure language with very few
exceptions to the rule. This gives students the opportunity to study how a
language is developed, and provides an excellent foundation for learning English
grammar, as well as providing a background for learning other conversational
languages.
This approach to learning grammar is logical but can
be a challenge for many students because it is a different way of looking at
grammar. Language is a difficult
subject to learn on a once a week basis, so it is imperative that your student
spends the other 3-4 school days doing the assigned homework, studying
vocabulary and memorizing endings. Because Latin requires a significant amount
of memorization, those students that wait until the night before or morning of
class do not do as well as those that spend time throughout the week memorizing
vocabulary and endings.
As homeschooling parents, I rely on you to monitor
your student’s progress by looking at the homework that I have corrected and
returned, weekly quiz grades, and homework
due. I will give each student a
midterm grade in late January and a final grade in May, but I will not initiate
contact with parents if students are not turning in homework or are failing
quizzes or exams. Please refer to
the grading policy for information as to how grades are determined. Grades and
homework status will be available on this website so that you can monitor your
student’s progress.
You can contact me anytime to check on your
student’s progress, and I will be willing to meet with your student at a
non-class time to answer questions or help with any difficulty encountered with
homework.
