Roman History Project

REQUIREMENTS: The project will not be accepted or graded without the following format and requirements.

 

v     This sheet must be the first page

v     Minimum three pages typed (handwritten not accepted)

v     Three spelling errors or less; three grammar errors or less

v     Written in your own words

v     Bibliography with minimum five sources; at least 2 books

v     Proper cover (flat cover, not a 3-ring binder)

v     Title page

 

CONTENT: Choose 4 (four) of the following topics. Each topic is worth a total of 50 points. Points will be given based on thoroughness of topic covered. You can include pictures or anything else to add to the interest of the project.

 

                    I.      What are the Laws of the Twelve Tables. Why, how, and by whom were they written

                 II.      Who are the first 7 kings of Rome.

Write one paragraph about each one including what significant role they played in the development of Rome

               III.      Who is Gaius Mucius Scaevola and tell the story of how he got his name? Which Roman author wrote the story about him?

              IV.      Find a poem (at least 24 lines) written by a Roman poet and write it out in English and in Latin.

You should be able to find English translations online.

Write 2-3 paragraphs about the poet.

                 V.      Explain the differences between the Kalends, the Nones, and the Ides. How did each one relate to the moon phases. Where did the quote “Beware the Ides of March” originate?

              VI.      Find pictures of three different hairstyles (women, if you are a girl; men, if you are a boy). With women, include a description of color, additional ornaments used to make the style, the time period you would see that particular style, class of women that would wear that particular style; with men, include facial hair styles, time period, class of men. Feel free to include any other interesting facts about hairstyle.

            VII.      Give a brief overview or show with a drawing of the following ball games. Which modern day game is each similar to?

         VIII.      Mosaics were a very important part of the Roman house. Describe what a mosaic was, who had them, how and by whom they were designed, and how they were constructed.

Go to the site: http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/mosaic/index.htm and design a mosaic. Print it off and include it in your project, telling the significance of the design.
